You’ve started your member profile but are having trouble deciding what topics you want to share with others. We can help!
Checkin is a place where you can support somebody who is going through what you have already been through. Maybe there was a period of your life that wasn’t easy and you wished you had a listening ear. The best way to frame your choice is to finish this sentence: "I know what it's like to..."
Whatever you choose should be important to you! This is not LinkedIn - so don’t enter the experiences you can offer as expertise or service. Go for the topics that are personal and unique - that make you, you. The more specific, the better! We know this might seem counterintuitive, but saying you've "been through it all" doesn't help others relate to you and form that connection. Having someone see themselves in your topic is important. We currently have 800+ members available to checkin on topics in these core categories that cover major life changes:
Faith & Spirituality
Family & Parenting
Illness & Disability
Loss, Grief, & Trauma
Love & Heartbreak
Moving Away & To
Work & Career
The topic description you write should be one that tells your story (in a condensed way). Avoid the urge to list credentials or statements like, "I can teach you/help you ___". At Checkin we're about providing a safe space, listening, and showing empathy. We want our members to feel safe coming as they are and not feel pressured to change or better themselves. Sometimes all anyone needs is to speak to someone else that can say, "I've been there" so they know that they're not alone. That's just as helpful and valuable.
Here's a couple examples of a good topic description:
One more thing to note is that we've temporarily hit Pause on certain sensitive topics especially those that relate to potential medical or clinical diagnoses. We are in the process of bringing on more staff and expertise in this area so that when we do offer space for these topics on Checkin again in the future, we'll feel more confident about the health and safety of members checking in about them. The topics we are pausing for now include:
Sexual Assault & Trauma
Physical Abuse & Trauma
Anxiety and Depression
Substance Abuse & Addiction
While some things may not be listed here, please keep in mind the potential gravity of the topic and try to avoid placing that weight on the person you're speaking to. Remember that you're checking in with peers and not licensed therapists. We'll be sure to reach out and let you know once this pause has been lifted!
Thank you all for joining our community and showing up for others ❤️
